Frequently Asked Questions – Hikari Staple Koi Food
1. What is Hikari Staple Koi Food used for?
Hikari Staple is a complete daily diet designed to support steady growth, overall health, and balanced nutrition in pond koi. It is ideal as a maintenance food for regular feeding during warmer months.
2. Is Hikari Staple suitable for all koi sizes?
Yes. Hikari Staple is available in different pellet sizes to suit small, medium, and larger koi. Always choose the correct pellet size to ensure easy digestion and prevent waste.
3. How often should I feed Hikari Staple to my koi?
Only provide what the fish can consume within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.
For 18-30°C (64-86°F) - Feed 2 to 4 times per day the amount your fish will completely consume within 5 minutes.
For 11-18°C (52-64°F) - Feed no more than twice daily the amount your fish will completely consume within 5 minutes. For best results try to feed during the warmer part of the day.
Below 11°C (52°F) - We suggest using Hikari Wheat-Germ Formula, specially designed for lower temperature digestibility.
4. Can I feed Hikari Staple all year round?
Hikari Staple can be fed throughout spring, summer, and early autumn when water temperatures allow normal digestion. In colder winter months, a wheatgerm-based food may be more suitable.
5. Does Hikari Staple float or sink?
Hikari Staple pellets float. Floating food allows you to monitor feeding behaviour, reduce waste, and remove uneaten pellets if necessary.
6. Will this food help improve koi colour?
Hikari Staple is primarily a maintenance and growth-supporting diet. While it supports overall health and condition, it is not a dedicated colour-enhancing formula. For colour improvement, consider supplementing with a colour-specific feed during peak season.
7. Does Hikari Staple help keep pond water clear?
Yes. The highly digestible ingredients help reduce excess waste, which supports better filtration efficiency and improved pond water clarity when combined with proper pond maintenance.
8. What water temperature is best for feeding Hikari Staple?
For best results, feed when pond water temperatures are consistently above 10–12°C. Feeding below this range may reduce digestion efficiency.
9. How should I store Hikari Staple Koi Food?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bag sealed tightly to maintain freshness and nutritional value.
10. Is Hikari a trusted koi food brand?
Hikari is widely recognised among koi keepers for consistent quality and scientifically developed fish nutrition formulas.
